Tanzania and Orphaned Children Facts

Tanzania is in East Africa and is the home of the world-famous Kilimanjaro, Africa’s highest mountain. Despite the fact that Arusha, an area near the base of Mt. Kilimanjaro, is a major tourist attraction, it is still a very impoverished area with most Tanzanians making only about $1.25 a day. In addition to the extensive poverty, Tanzania has also been ravaged by the AIDS virus.

Tanzania ranks fourth in the world for the number of deaths due to AIDS with more than 1.4 million people living with HIV/AIDS. There are about 1.3 million orphans in Tanzania alone as a result of the AIDs epidemic. This leaves more than 40% of the population is under the age of 14.
